Sick of the same old sandwich?

Tired of eating toast?

Lunch? What’s that?

One of the many, many benefits of working from home is that we can take our lunch breaks when we like and eat what we like. No opening up our lunch bags to a sad soggy cheese sandwich or looking disappointingly at the selection on offer in our local Tesco/Boots/Waitrose – delete as appropriate. Of course, at the moment, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be aching to pop out for anything, even if it’s ‘just a sandwich’. And sandwiches can be wondrous things when done right. Actually, it would be really nice to pop anywhere for lunch, I’m really missing coffee shops and delis…

Anyway, back to the matter in hand…. lunches, at home. We should stop for a proper break, but it can be all too tempting to grab a quick piece of toast on the fly, shovel in a bowl of cereal between Zoom calls, or rustle up a sandwich and eat al desko while reading emails.

In our house, in our current state of ‘new normal’, we’re taking a break at 12:30 when our daughter stops for her break from virtual schooling. We eat lunch together, so there’s no grab and go. We sit and eat and chat.

Food is always a focus here, but lunch can get a bit samey, even boring. I plan our evening meals before doing the weekly shop, usually not giving lunch more than a passing thought of bread, stuff to go in sandwiches, maybe eggs or beans on toast.

Throughout February, I’m making it my mission to try and eat something different for lunch every day, Monday-Friday. There will be some leftovers re-purposed, some lunches that are quick to prepare, some light meals that can cook while I work and a few that will need a bit of advanced planning.

Can I do a month of different lunches? Let’s see….
