Baking is…solitude that brings people together.

Me, myself, and a spoon and a bowl as life around the house carries on around me.

More often than not, it attracts attention and my orbiting moons circle back in closely to share a spoon lick or a first taste fresh from the oven. If the house is empty, they’ll be welcomed back by biscuity smells and a warm kitchen. That warms my heart.

Baking is an immersion into the task in hand that unlocks deeper benefits from somewhere deep in my soul. I’m here, in this moment. Present in this task. Baking, creating, trying new or trusty tried and tested.

Maybe it’s mindfulness or meditation. Maybe it’s therapy. Maybe it’s just as simple as doing something I enjoy. Maybe it’s the joy from making something to share with family or friends. Maybe it’s being methodical but a little bit scientific. Maybe it’s just simply creating. Maybe I’m just greedy.

A few simple ingredients are transformed into something beautifully delicious. Greater than the sum of its parts, a biscuit is so much more than butter, flour, sugar and eggs.

Baking is alchemy.

Life is better with baking.

Baking calms the anxiety, it unburdens the soul, it occupies restless hands and restless heads. Baking is just enough to do when I’ve no energy for anything else, when I’m bored but can’t be bothered.

When I’m happy, it makes me happier. With every sweet mouthful, it puts smiles on faces and melts troubles away.

Baking is the process of cooking bread, cakes or biscuits.

Baking is sharing.

Baking is giving.
