Today is the is final lunch instalment this February from me. My month of #WFH Lunch posts has come to an end.

I’ll leave you with my doorstop Croque.

She’s a monstrous Madame that did, quite frankly, leave me in need of a little lie down. But no, it was back to work I went…

It’s a rustic, homely, anglicised take on a classic croque which I’ve made with homemade bread, smoked ham, cheddar cheese, English mustard and a runny fried egg.

After assembling the sandwiches, I grilled them on each side to toast the bread and melt the cheese inside. Then topped with a runny fried egg.

Très bonne.

I’ve seen croques made a few different ways. Some topped with extra cheese, some plain, classic sans oeuf – Croque Monsieur, some topped with a bechamel sauce and more cheese…but this plain version simply topped with a fried egg works great for a Friday lunchtime and is an indulgent alternative to an everyday ham & cheese sandwich or toastie.
